Boiler Room is great. A home for musicians to exhibit their live performances online, bolstering the fan base they may already have or planting the seeds for one to grow. The world of electronic music is vast; each new artist discovered just one small segment of a genre indicative of the human spirit. Boiler Room shows bring artists together, forming interesting and enjoyable combinations of auditory gold. One of my favorite shows is the New York edition of Machinedrum's Vapor City Tour (also taking place in London and Berlin), which coincided with the release of his fantastic album, Vapor City in autumn of 2013.
One artist on that show caught my attention, a DJ Paypal. His 25-minute set was beyond anything I expected; from trap-influenced happy hardcore edits from an obscure arcade game soundtrack, or even Paypal's own compositions (like the final track, a personal favorite), it was unlike anything I had heard before.
Paypal popped up on my radar a few days ago, this time releasing another of his songs from that infamous set, this time a collaboration. German producer Ticklish and Paypal worked on this remix of a Verse Simmonds song, and the outcome rocks. Hard-hitting, yet smooth, "Bent Up" takes jersey club, trap, footwork, r&b and combines them nicely, adding to my appreciation for the mysterious DJ Paypal..
Pick up "Bent Up" on Ticklish's "Reboots: Vol. 2" March 24th.
