Vic Mensa is new name you might have seen popping up around the Internet this past month, but he’s no stranger to the music industry. As the former lead rapper of the buzzworthy group Kids These Days, he has already seen appearances at top billing festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella, a major label debut with the Jeff Tweedy-produced LP Traphouse Rock, and a band breakup due to creative differences just months later. Now, Vic Mensa returns to the spotlight as a solo act after dropping his free album INNANETAPE just last week.
“Lovely Day” is an exceptional track from the tape. It features Vic's double-time, stream of consciousness flow over producer Peter Cottontale’s stuttered drums and flurry of upbeat piano stabs, influenced by Chicago's juke scene. The music video lives up to the song’s title, showing Vic and his posse cruising on a sunny California highway, visiting the beach with two lady companions, and crashing a pool party to top it off.
The album is Vic's biggest work to date, boasting features from Eliza Doolittle, Thundercat, Ab-Soul, and fellow Chicagoan and partner in crime, Chance the Rapper. Stream INNANETAPE in its entirety below and download it for free on Datpiff.
