With electronic music being as vast of a playing field as it is, I think it's safe to make the observation that pretty much everyone finds a comfort zone. A genre in particular that they can really relate to, you know? Some people plug in their headphones and tune out the world to trance, others to dubstep, trap, electro, and so on/so forth. However, I have to admit that there are tracks and producers out there that just defy all of the generalizations. Basically like taking electronic production and saying "Hey. Meet music."
A few weeks ago, when I first took on this whole idea for the Spotlight Sunday series, my friend Kasum hit me up on the interwebs with all the excitement one could convey over an online message. He told me he had this friend that was making some music that was out of left field, but had all the feels you would ever need. Needless to say I was pretty intrigued. A few Soundcloud clicks later, I found myself locked down for the next hour by an album that made my jaw drop every few bars. That's right, an entire album. Title: Anthology. The prodigy behind the production: Cowp.
So imagine if you took all the qualities that you like about Flume, mix it up with some Cashmere Cat vibes and top it all off with all the organic instruments that make music powerful, and you have this album. It's a game changer. Piano. Subtle synths. Vocal chops. And is that a sitar?? All the yes in the world. What I think I enjoyed the most about this collection of tracks is the fact that they are all so diverse. Yes, a signature sound can be heard throughout all of them, and there are elements that are retained and rehashed, but the production value of each song is so different. They each have their own life. As a producer, it was refreshing as hell to experience.
Well there you have it. I could go on writing this, but I'd rather listen to this album again, and I encourage you to do the same (like as soon as you finish reading this). I will ask that you really take the time to listen to it. The intricacies are mind-boggling. Oh yeah, Cowp is giving it all away for free. Download it HERE and enjoy all the good vibes. 'Til next time, friends!
