Spotlight: Flume

Flume is Australia’s best kept secret. Well... at least best kept from us Americans. He has exploded onto the scene in his home country, reaching number one on the ARIA charts with his self-titled and certified platinum debut album. The 21-year-old beatmaker is also making quite the name for himself among his industry peers, counting Skrillex, Boys Noize, and Steve Aoki among his fans.

Flume’s self-described sound of “atmospheric R&B and dance-influenced music” is steeped in the soulful, sample-heavy tradition of the late great J Dilla, with elements of hip-hop and chillwave that create a truly defined sound. Its gauzy synths and melodic basslines are complemented by crisp vocal work that sounds like a sample off of a vinyl record. Not to say that Flume isn’t bound to a single genre. Check out his dubbed-out “More Than You Thought” soundtracking the stunning visuals on one of his Infinity Prism tour videos:

Be on the look out for big things coming from Flume this year, I’m predicting a very bright future for this nascent producer. Stream his latest remix of another rising star in their own right, the UK’s garage revivalists Disclosure, below.

PHILLY AREA: Don't forget to buy tickets to his show at the TLA on Sept. 12! See you there 😉
