Seven Damn Good Reasons To Attend Electric Forest 2015

June 16, 2015 -

Daily Beat Staff

Electric Forest, one of the most unique experiences and intricately designed festivals in North America, gives you several damn good reasons to make your way back to Rothbury, Michigan in 2015. A few members of our squad here at Daily Beat wish to put how amazing this music festival really is into deeper perspective - we hope you can agree!

1. Bassnectar is BACK

I think we've all been waiting around since 2012 for Lorin to come back and bless Rothbury with his greatness. And let's be real guys, there really isn't anything comparable to a Bassnectar set. It should have been practically illegal for him to be a no-show for 2 years. Thank the freakin' bass gods for Insomniac/Madison House Presents! Check out the 2012 Electric Forest Recap below (feat. Bassnectar) to reminisce in preparation for his 2015 set!

2. Jam Bands and Funk Fever

If there is one thing Electric Forest has always been great at doing is giving the lineup a nice taste of variety. As much as we love and respect electronic music, this festival was born with jam band roots as The String Cheese Incident headlines with three shows every year. Since it's early days as Rothbury, Sherwood Forest has been known to host some of the best touring acts in the jam and funk scene and we suggest you make an effort to catch someone new! This year the amount of talent on the lineup is insane with highly anticipated sets from Galactic with Macy Gray, Lettuce, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Lotus, Yonder Mountain String Band, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros and Eoto. You may be lounging in a hammock or trekking between stages when you hear sweet guitar riffs or smooth banjo pickings that may lead you to your next favorite band. Stay curious, the forest is a place to discover things about yourself that you didn't know existed and a chance to expand your horizons to heights you thought were unreachable.

3. Skrillex has returned

Not only is Electric Forest recognized for jam bands and funk fever, but it is also well known for gathering bass junkies together into one giant, mind-blowing bunch. Skrillex hasn't been on an Electric Forest lineup since 2011, making 2015 the big year for prime acts! This busy producer is constantly on the road or in a plane heading to gigs all around the world. I would be prepared for just as wild of a set as his gig at Ultra Music Festival -  so don't be surprised if Diplo or Bieber show up unexpectedly.  Let's see what tricks Sonny has up his sleeve for this one.

4. ODESZA, Phantogram and Flume

All three of these acts have something unique and interactive to offer a music festival like Electric Forest. ODESZA has taken the electronic dance music industry by storm this year. They are best known for their "irresistible, startling dreaminess, addictive drums and fathoms-deep bass" that have easily increased their popularity. You might have caught them at iconic music festivals like Coachella, SXSW and Ultra Music Festival.

The Greenwich, New York electronic rock duo known as Phantogram are going to light up the forest this year with their stunning, live band/vocal performance. The pair have been on countless tours ever since the 2014 release of their wildly successful second album "Voices." It's safe to say that attendees will be in for quite a treat with these two!

It's honestly the biggest surprise to see Flume on Electric Forest's lineup this year. Harley Streten has been hard at work in the studio, owing to that fact that he hasn't been on TOO many lineups until about mid-May. He started the first leg of his 2015 tour dates in North America and has only recently begun the third leg that will end in Rothbury, Michigan on June 25. Not only will Streten grant us with his presence, but a handful of our favorite Future Classic artists will be in attendance as well like Wave Racer, Four Tet, Lido, GoldLink, Mr. Carmack and Nadus. If you haven't had the chance to experience the mind-altering visuals and game-changing sound that is Flume, it's highly recommended that you head on over to his set. (Check out part three of his 2014 North American Tour).

5. Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey Stirling, an American violinist, dancer, performance artist and composer brings her presence to the forest for the first time - ever. She was named by Forbes as the class of 2015's "30 Under 30 In Music." Stirling is best known for her live, choreographed violin performances that earned her a finalist position on America's Got Talent in 2010. It's commonplace for Electric Forest to book stimulating acts like LS - can't wait to see her live!

6. Participation

One of our favorite parts of Electric Forest is how involved they get their festival-goers to be… from volunteering, to campsite contests, to recycling incentives, there is a chance for everyone to leave their mark on the festival. Like most events, a lot of what is happening behind the scenes is run by people who have a passion for getting involved and EF is just the place for them. The volunteer program is run by a Work Exchange Team (WET) and allows fest goers to trade a few hours of their weekend in exchange for a free ticket. This is a great way to deepen your appreciation for festivals, meet new friends with similar interests and get an inside look at the magic.

Not only is volunteering a great way to be involved, you can also participate in the Ultimate Camp contest that is held annually at the festival. Do you think you and your crew have what it takes to be crowned the ultimate camp? Electricology, The Forest’s sustainability program, has created a contest that judge camps based on their offering to the community, their décor and costumes for a chance to win passes to Electric Forest 2016! This is a fun way to get your whole group involved and create a camp that no one will forget.

Electricology doesn't just host this awesome camp contests, they also host a variety of contest throughout the weekend that allow attendees to be rewarded for their green deeds. Simple things like making sure your plate ends up the in the right recycling trash can or how clean your campsite is after the festivities could win you prizes such as VIP upgrades, artists meet and greets or even some EF merchandise. Being green is cool and getting rewarded for it is even cooler!

7. Visual arts/interactive displays

Besides always bringing a plethora of some of the most talented and relevant artists, one of the biggest things that sets Electric Forest apart from most festivals is their attention to detail and emphasis on creating a unique experience for the headliners. The festival stands true to its name, with lighting and visual artist Andrew Carroll designing a forest that is unlike anything you have ever seen and truly is a world of its own. From the moment you enter under the Sherwood Forest archway you are instantly greeted with feelings of overwhelming sensory stimulation, every direction you look in there is something to see and experience. Sherwood contains everything from musical acts on tucked away stages hidden throughout the trees, to insane interactive trippy art installations to performers in intricate costumes interacting with festival goers and a hammock lovers’ heaven. You can pass your free time in the forest catching a silent disco set, participating in an epic dance battle in a geodesic dome, meditating in a giant nest or simply enjoy sinking into a hammock and watching the lasers dance on the trees.

When it comes to creating a unique experience unlike any other festival in North America, Insomniac and Madison House Presents goes above and beyond to build something that words can simply not explain and must be understood with your eyes. Electric Forest is a maze of undiscovered territory, with the constantly changing lights and landscape transforming from day to night, it is easy and likely you will find yourself wondering away from your crew in amazement through this vast wonderland; embrace the journey and don’t worry, as the saying goes, get lost in the forest and find yourself.
