The Return of GHE20G0TH1K

July 23, 2014 -

Last Saturday marked the return of the storied GHE20G0TH1K party at Santos Party House in Manhattan. For those not familiar, this event is about the closest you'll get to a truebred London rave in the middle of New York City. Conceived by DJ Venus X in 2009, it merges elements of punk, high fashion, streetwear, regional club music, and Internet culture into one overarching attitude - GHE20G0TH1K.

GHE20G0TH1K grew from an event held in small Brooklyn bars to a staple of the NY club scene in downtown spaces and warehouses. Tastemakers like Alexander Wang and M.I.A. were known as regular attendees before the party was unceremoniously shut down just two months ago. Venus X blamed Rihanna, citing her blatant cultural appropriation of #ghettogoth on Instagram as the primary reason. Fortunately, Venus must have had a change of heart because the party was back in action as of last weekend.

The lineup featured Jersey club queen UNiiQU3, the Diplo-affiliated ghettotech artist Maluca, $hayne aka Shayne Oliver - founder of Hood By Air, and many more. The venue's couches remained empty for the majority of the night as the dancefloor quickly filled up to selections of tribal house, Jersey and Baltimore club tunes, and lots of Young Thug. Also spotted was venue co-owner Despot and Atlanta rapper on the rise Rome Fortune. Keep an ear to the ground for more GHE20G0TH1K parties in the near future and recap the night in pictures on our exclusive photo album on Facebook.
