Preview: Skrillex (feat. Ellie Goulding) - Because

We all know how quiet Sonny Moore AKA Skrillex has been on the production side of music lately, but as of a few days ago some Skrillex tracks have started to surface and we at Daily Beat couldn't be any happier. Ellie Goulding recently released an amazing mix on Annie Mac's radio show, showcasing her sublime ear for music (if you want to have a listen check it out HERE), but also closing with her new collaboration with Skrillex. This new track not only shows a different side in comparison to the producers 'wilder' side, but showcases the diversity that he has, showing listeners he is more than just someone that releases 'dubstep' bangers.

So it's been quite a while (4 months, in fact) since Skrillex has released any material. And he still hasn't. The last releases were a collection of 3 VIP remixes of 'Try it Out' featuring Owsla label signee, Alvin Risk, a song which also became prevalent because of its use in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. His previous (and first) collaboration with Ellie Goulding was on his 2011 Bangarang EP, on a song titled 'Summit', and it was therefore a welcome surprise when Goulding revealed in her 'Goodnight Valentine' mix on Annie Mac presents, a song which had been written 2 years previous by the duo whilst they were dating. The song, 'Because', is a hauntingly beautiful, atmospheric journey, similar in style to Skrillex's previous stylistic switch-up in 'Leaving' (which many people compared to the style Burial writes in), incorporating lilting melodies, chopped up breaks and heavily processed vocals. In fact, Goulding's presence on the song seems to be much more abstract from usual producer-singer collaborations; her voice has been used in a fashion more akin to an instrument than as a vocalist, which makes it sound almost sample based. Not that this is a bad thing. Quite the contrary, the  manipulation of vocals in this way has fostered a captivating and original ambience, and marks a second significant departure from the American Dubstep veteran's signature growls and high-pitched wobbles. Truly, this is an impressive piece, and personally I cannot wait to hear what direction Skrillex takes next.
