Mac Demarco: "Ode to Viceroy"

November 3, 2012 -

Wisdom is not an automatic byproduct of age, and every once in a while you'll meet someone who's wise way beyond his years. What sounds like a achy croon out of a rusty old jukebox is actually Mac Demarco's "Ode to Viceroy," the best track on his newest record, 2. "Viceroy" at first sounds like the 20-something Demarco's artistic mission statement--a wry assertion of his youthful zen, most obvious in the lines: "Viceroy, don't take me for a fool now; / I'm only trying to calm down. / Just trying to keep it cool." Halfway through the first chorus, though, you get the joke. The apostrophe'd "Viceroy" is, of course, nothing more than a shiesty pack of discount cigs. It might take you til the second chorus to catch the line "I'll smoke you til I'm dyin'" bit, but as soon as  you do, you'll be greeted by a burst of laughing guitar riffs. Demarco wants you to be in on the communal gag; he wants to connect, even if that connection is fulfilled via tobacco smoke and imminent death. How's that for wisdom?
