Shy Luv

We spoke to Sam Knowles (Karma Kid) in-between sets on the Temple Island and BBC Introducing stages last year at Bestival's 10th anniversary festival. He told us about his upcoming 4 track EP release "Bird of Prey" with Future Classic, and then briefly mentioned his involvement with a selection of other talented producers / artists on a project called "Shy Luv".

"I've got a brand new project with my best mate. It's called 'Shy Love' - we're just developing an album at the minute, and we've been working with a bunch of really talented singers. It's gonna be wicked" - Sam Knowles

Now it's 2015 and we have a little more information about this new, exciting collaboration of artists:

Sam Knowles, Ryan Ashley and Jake Norman are Shy Luv, a new London-based trio getting ready to drop their own unique blend of Hip-Hop flavoured beats and cutting edge production with sharp, soulful vocals. Their debut ‘Caught Up On You’ EP is set to drop on 8th June 2015 via their own white label imprint Shy Luv Recordings. Sam Knowles might be better known by his Karma Kid alias, with a recent release for Future Classic, remixes for Andreya TrianaBen Pearce and Flight Facilities and studio work for the likes of rising UK R&B siren K Stewart cementing him as one of the UK’s hottest new talents. He is joined on production duties by Jake Norman who is known for his Armeria project, having remixed Years & YearsJoel Compass and Clean Bandit to name a few. Rising vocalist Ryan Ashley completes the trio, following notable features including PMR’s Cyril Hahn.

Shy Luv was born from the three friends meeting up for informal studio sessions in a Hackney basement last summer, with the result of these sessions soon forming the basis of a new genre-spanning live band which reflects their love of current Hip-Hop and forward thinking electronic music with a melodic, soulful sensibility. With a couple of songs in the bank and the creative juices flowing, the rest of the EP took shape with instrumentals bouncing from London to Los Angeles in between busy studio schedules, with Sam based in the US earlier this year.

The LA sun shines throughout the EP, with opener ‘Brave’ building across ethereal chopped, undulating vocals, submerged synths and a playful topline which has summer romance all over it. The EP’s title track ‘Caught Up On You’ is a rousing modern love song, an infectious ode to total devotion. "We wrote 'Caught Up On You' in the studio when it was really hot last summer," Jake commented. "It was the first time we'd got together to write new music in a long time and this song came out of that headspace.

‘Where You At’ opens with a memorable DJ Kool sample before launching into a slinky, rolling R&B number. The record closes with the euphoric ‘Magnetise’, a sun-drenched, sparkling jam about being propelled together by an unknown force.

It’s a confident introduction to three young talents who are already killing it on their own, but together become a force to be reckoned with.
