This past Saturday I had to pleasure of meeting with Francis Mercier, a Haiti-native producer on the path to taking the scene by storm. The release party was for his new single, "Running", a deep topical-esque house track he made with Alive Act, featuring the lovely Joanna Teters. Complete with an uplifting melody, tangible beats, and a sexy saxophone solo, Mercier's work has easily made its way into my summer playlist.
Besides his beaming personality and fun-loving production style, Francis also boasts some seriously impressive mixing skills. Of course for his own release party, he played an opening set before buying a round of drinks for his friends. Dropping edits of ZHU, Disclosure, Oliver Heldens, and sporadic bursts of hip hop, the DJ effectively primed his guests for a memorable night.
Mercier has been producing for about 8 years, but only recently started mixing at clubs. Like many others, his first taste of electronic bliss came when he was introduced to Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren almost a decade ago. After seeing both trance gods perform in Europe as a teen, he ultimately decided he wanted to devote his life to making music. Presently, he draws inspiration from artists like TCHAMI and Heldens; although he loves the nu disco future house movement, he stresses he never plans to produce exclusively in one style. As his latest single takes a turn from his previous work; he explains the shift in character was not intentional or planned. His goal is to create and perform with what makes him feel good, regardless of trends or genres. Francis' next move is a global tour, returning to the states after touching base in Europe and South America.
