Alhough they're from Amsterdam, Lars Dales and Maarten Smeets, have been reppin' the good ol' U. S. of A. as musical duo Detroit Swindle. With their most recent release on Berlin-based Dirt Crew Recordings, and having remixed artists like Medlar and Waze & Odyssey, Detroit Swindle have been on the rise throughout this past year, progressing the musical fields of techno and house with their contributions.
The "Huh, What!" EP is a 4-track release that's coherent and cohesive, yet full of new and impressive sounds. First up is the track "Huh, What!"; starting off with pulsing deep synths and layered hi-hats, the track then drops into a deep house track worthy of a vogue dance. Next up is the "Huh, What!" (Laszlo Dancehall Exercise) Remix; an interesting re-work of the title track into a heavy techno track. The B-Side of the EP gets even more diverse with the third track, "The Fat Rat". A simple snare house beat quickly accelerates to a swingy and clap-filled breakdown of funk that sounds straight out of the Midwest. The EP ends with "Monkey Wrench", a slower and soulful minor-chord filled song that brings the release to a warm and upbeat close.
Look out for their debut album, "Boxed Out", this coming March.
