Beats & Pieces Vol. XIX

May 13, 2016 -

Matt Haun

Today we're bringing you the eighteenth installment of Beats & Pieces to get your weekend kicked off right. With the major influx of album releases lately (e.g. Radiohead, James Blake, Kaytranada, Kygo, the list goes on…), there's been no shortage of awesome new music going around. But instead of curating a catalog of records you’ve already been made aware of, I - MTHD - decided to try and dish the scoop on some tracks that might have flown under your radar until now.

1. Limitless - Trust

The first tune I chose for B&P 18 is one from a rising ICON Collective graduate who goes by the name Limitless. With less than a grand worth of SoundCloud followers so far, it’s clear the young up-and-comer is still a largely undiscovered needle in a haystack. But with extremely solid tracks like Trust, and his latest remix of Steve James’s Renaissance, we’ll no doubt be seeing Limitless climbing through the ranks in due time. Keep an eye out for his Illenium remix dropping next week!

2. KLAX - CAPTIVE

Next up on the list is yet another track born from the emanating talent of ICON Collective. Coming to us from a pair of skillful individuals producing under the name KLAX, CAPTIVE exists pretty much on the opposite end of the bass music spectrum as Trust. And while the duo has seen even less exposure than Limitless, their inevitable rise is no less apparent. CAPTIVE aside, KLAX has only released one other track – an amazingly blended DnB/future bass remix of NGHTMRE’s Holdin’ On To Me. These guys are sure to blow up, so I definitely suggest keeping them on your watchlist.

3. Mura Masa - What if I go?

[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/251904713" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /]

Although you probably have been familiarized with Mura Masa, I am honestly surprised how infrequently I hear his name. His productions never cease to amaze me. His brilliant track Firefly got thrown in a B&P way back in the third installment, but MM hasn’t gotten any Daily Beat love since. Well his latest single What if I go? has been rinsing in my playlists since it dropped. And if you hadn’t heard it before now, I’m sure you’re about to have it on repeat too. Mura Masa is actually performing in LA tonight at the Roxy, alongside NAO – the vocalist in Firefly. And damn you if you’re lucky enough to be in attendance.

4. Krs. - Georgina ft. Vybz Kartel

FilmNoir: Sound is a super sweet collective founded by some awesomely innovative producers, one of which goes by the name of Krs. Not much can be found about Krs. other than the fact they put out banging tracks with album artwork of banging babes. Georgina is far from Krs.’s latest release, but I have not been able to get it out of my head. Though Vybz Kartel’s lyricism is pretty much indiscernible, the vocals pair so perfectly with the production it doesn’t matter. All I know is the song is about Georgina, and I’m sure she is fine as hell.

5. KANDY - Initiator ft. Mina

[soundcloud url="https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/255908064" params="auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true" width="100%" height="166" iframe="true" /]

For the last track on B&P 18, I decided to end things with a bang. A month ago we published a great interview with the talented NY producer KANDY. He put out a pair of dope singles in the past few weeks, but back in March he dropped a free EP titled “Flavors”. Although the last two of the EP’s three tracks boast incredible features from the likes of Candyland and Example, it is the first track on Flavors that really caught my ears. Initiator delivers an intense jungle terror vibe that prevents my body from keeping still. Again we have another case of unintelligible vocals, save the title-line “initiator”. And yet again, it does not matter. I don’t know what she is saying and I love it.

I really enjoyed my first opportunity to curate a Beats & Pieces list for you all. Hope you dig my suggested listening. Until next time, keep sharing those dope tunes!
