5 Indie Electronic Acts to Catch At CRSSD Fest Spring 2019

February 26, 2019 -

San Diego's CRSSD Fest is just around the corner for their Spring installment. The music festival hosted by FNGRS CRSSD is a big West Coast destination for electronic music lovers and will be celebrating their five year reunion. This event is known for its phenomenal lineups that always sport some of the biggest names in house and electronic music. This Spring it features Justin Martin, Sonny Fodera, Lane 8, and Mason Maynard to name a few. Although I'm always down with house vibes all weekend, what really draws me back to this event every year is its diverse left-field choices. Here I'll be sharing some of my top indie electronic and experimental artists that are less on the house vibe than most artists. Hope you get to check some of these out this weekend!

LADYTRON

It's been about 8 years since the Liverpool based group Ladytron have graced the stage with their dreamy styles of electro-pop. CRSSD Festival will mark their big return to the world along with a new self-titled record. This band will surely attract those who appreciate European styles of electronica from the 2000's.

PHANTOGRAM

An obvious choice, the duo known as Phantogram will be making their CRSSD Fest debut with a headlining performance on the main stage. Around the time that Ladytron went on hiatus in 2011, Phantogram was beginning to make waves. Their older work drowns in depressing and nightmarish melodies backed by lo-fi sample based hip-hop. As a group they've developed into stars of modern music festivals  with a combination of heavy rock infused electronica that center around big bass heavy beats.

DAVID AUGUST

David August is easily our top pick for CRSSD this year. His Berlin roots have trained him to be one of the top dogs in experimental electronic music. His discography flexes releases from labels such as Solomun's Diynamic Music, but his later career find him on labels such as Ninja Tune, home to artists such as Bonobo and Machinedrum. After a five year hiatus, David August returned late 2018 with a full length record D'ANGELO as well as another ambient record DCXXXIX A.C. His sound has evolved into a fused style of dissonant electronic and downtempo house. We could compare his vibe to Nicolas Jaar, but August is bringing his sound influence from a completely different part of the world so we'd rather let his music speak for itself.

JUNGLE

Jungle's music can be described as "midtempo 70's funk". They piece together old styles of music with a large collective of musicians. The outcome is a chaotic dance party that can rock a crowd like no other. The outfit comes from London and has made a huge impact via their live shows at festivals across the U.S. Something about their electric grooves and stunning musicianship has made them a top choice for festivals this year. Don't believe us? Checkout this video of them at Bonnaroo.

DIGITALISM

What better way to celebrate the 5th anniversary of CRSSD Fest then with one of the pioneering bands of indie electronic. Digitalism is a goldmine when it comes to dirty dance tracks that you might have heard at underground European clubs in the 2000's. They've remixed tracks for artists such as The Presets, Daft Punk, Klaxons, Cut Copy, and many more. Their live music fuses together punk rock, dank rock, and analog electronica. We'd definitely reccomend catching their performance if you want to hear your favorite DJ's favorite band.
