Being the youngest in my family, I always looked to my older siblings when I needed something, whether it is advice, protection, money, or maybe a book to read. Going into high school, my sister handed me a book called The Perks of Being a Wallflower. I’d go as far to say that it had changed my perspective on high school and life in general, and the first thing that I thought of when finishing the book was “I hope they make this into a movie”.
Throughout my 4 years in high school I worked as a projectionist in a movie theater and waited for the movie to be made. It took 6 years from the first time I read the book till the movie was released, and boy did that build up the anticipation. I even waited the extra few months till it wasn’t in theaters because I couldn’t afford a movie ticket at the time.
Watching the movie for the first time brought me to tears from how happy it made me. They got everything perfect. The cast was exactly who it should have been and they hit every major plot point in the book, something that is quite rare for a movie to do.
It’s a beautiful coming of age film of an introverted boys’ journey through adolescence and would recommend it to anyone of any age. The book is just as fantastic as the movie and should definitely beread before watching the movie to get the full effect.
