The Oscars Review: The Night's Top Three Dresses

March 5, 2013 -

As all the photos from the Oscars emerge, the best dresses inevitably emerge from the pack. Although Jennifer Lawrence’s blush Dior gown got a lot of attention the night of, in my opinion there were three dresses that stood out even more. Lawrence’s dress, while perfectly fitted and regally befitting of the evening’s Best Actress, wasn’t particularly unique. For me, the top three dresses of the night were worn by Amy Adams, Salma Hayek, and Halle Berry.

1 -    Amy Adams wore a light grey ruffled Oscar de la Renta gown that she reportedly designed alongside the designer himself. It complemented her classy up-do and simple make-up perfectly, making her look like the epitome of a Hollywood princess. The tight, fitted bodice accentuated her tiny waist, while the skirt was made up of a cascade of soft grey ruffles. The look was vaguely reminiscent of Penelope Cruz’s 2007 Versace gown. Overall, Adams wore my favorite dress of the night.

2 -    Salma Hayek defined classic Oscar elegance in a dark velvety Alexander McQueen dress with a high, gold collar. The dress hugged her curves perfectly and had a sweet-heart neckline that was highlighted by the jewelry-like collar. Hayek wore her hair in a large bun that showed off her long neck and bare shoulders. Aside from a small gold clutch and some tiny gold hairpieces, she didn’t wear jewelry, which allowed the classic, elegant dress to shine.

3 -    Halle Berry, despite the fact that I generally prefer more classic gowns, stunned in a sequined custom Versace gown. The black and silver stripes made the look elegant and flattering, while the sheer arms and deep V-neck made it more edgy. Although I generally don’t like shoulder pads, they worked well with the modern, sleek look of the dress. The now-forty-six year-old Bond girl didn’t look a day over thirty in the curve-skimming gown that highlighted her athletic figure.
