Sub Focus - Torus ( Album Review )

October 3, 2013 -

Oscar Hoyle

Since beginning his Drum n Bass journey back in 2003, Nick Douwma known famously as Sub Focus has made huge strides throughout the industry with releases such as 'Splash' and 'Timewarp' gaining big credit around the world. He's now back for his second studio album after an extremely busy summer with performances at many UK festivals such as Reading and Creamfields. With 14 diverse and unique tracks Torus is perhaps one of the Guildford - born producers most defining moment, with a new revolutionary sound seen in many of his new releases. The first song going by the same name as the album, is a heftier production - beginning with a radio message reporting something on the horizon the track drops into a heavier almost dubstep section similar to that of Falling Down, one of his most successful releases in the last few years. Next track is personally my favourite, ' Safe in Sound ' features a euphoric, liquid drum and bass inspired buildup before dropping into a typical Sub Focus drop featuring backdrop vocals and heavy bass kicks.

The best thing about this album is the way he has successfully included some of his biggest hits of the last few years - Falling Down, Out the Blue, Endorphins and Tidal Wave ( If you like this check out remixes by Flosstradamus, Shadow Child and Calum John ) into the album. With a vast difference in genres throughout this album from liquid funk ( 'You Make It Better' ) to chilled out indie - dance track Out of Reach, this album has it all. Honestly this could be one of the biggest album releases this year so make sure you take a listen. The vast array of genres in this album pays testament to his producing abilities - check out 'Close' a track featuring pure UK garage vibes with the crisp voice of MNEK. Enjoy
