Let me introduce you to SBTRKT (it’s pronounced ‘subtract’), a musical project led by the enigmatic East London DJ Aaron Jerome. His sound has been described as “post-dubstep,” “future garage,” and other Pitchfork-friendly buzzword genres, but I’ll let the music speak for itself. All you need to know is that it’s grooving.
Because of its anonymous and fluid nature, SBTRKT can also refer to the collaboration of Jerome and the rising UK R&B singer/producer Sampha. Along with contributing to over half of SBTRKT’s debut album in 2011, Sampha often joins Jerome on the road for his riveting live show. When their talents are combined, the result can be pure musical ecstasy or heartbreak, depending on the mood of the song. And sometimes, as with “Right Thing to Do” featuring blog darling Jessie Ware, the music is a well-crafted amalgamation of both elements.
For our friends in the D.C. area, SBTRKT will be throwing down a set for the Mad Decent Block Party on August 2nd. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to see one of the UK’s most underrated talents take the stage on our side of the pond. We know we won't! If you need any further convincing, stream SBTRKT’s graceful edit (but it’s more like a complete reconstruction) of Drake’s “Girls Love Beyonce” below.
