The Balance Presents Series introduces their newest compilation, mixed by Amsterdam-based DJ, Patrice Baumel. The mix merges the musician's most favored elements of techno, ambient, and electronica for a distinct audio trip. The full version will be released on April 29th.
Patrice Baumel earned his stripes as a mainstay of the Amsterdam music scene. He held residencies at some of the city's most iconic clubs while simultaneously releasing his debut album, Vapour. With Balance Presents, he joins the likes of Guy J and Fur Coat in a series of one-off compilations.
In his work, he's equally as emotive as he is technical. Rather than simply producing your typical run-of-the-mill electronic mix, the artist took a less common approach. Describing the mix, he says, "I wanted to blur the lines between 'DJ set' and 'production' and turn it into a composition in its own right.” The care that Baumel took is evident in the production's numerous layers, which are littered with found sounds and otherworldly melodies. "I wanted the result to be musical. I want the listener to totally forget about the nuts and bolts and just feel it." Baumel also chose not to pay any mind to whatever is "hot" now in the music market; instead, he opted for timeless records from his personal collection. "It was also really important to me to create something that is built to last, without any regard whatsoever for current trends."
Stream the mix preview below for a period of brief, audio-induced transcendence. Be sure to check out Patrice Baumel at his upcoming shows, including a stint at Miami Music Week, and another at Output in Brooklyn.
