Palladium Nights: Cosmic Gate & the Trance Armada [Review]

This past Saturday, the 2nd of April, heavyweight Mark Sixma and trance legends ATB and Cosmic Gate performed at the Hollywood Palladium in dusky Los Angeles, California. Just as the night was filled with banners waving the sigils of A State of Trance and Group Therapy, so was the music reflective of artists from Armada and Anjunabeats. Mark Sixma's set was primarily boom-driven, ATB's filled with timeless sing-a-longs, and Cosmic Gate's full of vibrant energy.

Let's discuss Cosmic Gate's galactic-sized set:

On the backdrop screen, a monochromatic universe's primordial plume of stardust extends its reach with Jerome Isma-ae's deep-bassed "Floyd." Hits from their recently released studio album "Start to Feel" soon followed: Maor Levi's remix of the vocal-driven "Alone," Ørjan Nilsen-collaborated "Fair Game," Rafaël Frost's remix of "Sparks After the Sunset," Super8 & Tab's uplifting remix of Yai "(Here We Go Again)," and live renditions of "Falling Back" and Alexander Popov's remix of "Run Away" performed by the silky smooth Eric Lumiere.

Cosmic Gate paid proper homage to Anjunabeats by spinning top hits like Sunny Lax's booming "Enceladus," Jason Ross and Wrechiski's all-killer "Frontier," and Above & Beyond's mash-up of the timeless "Black Room Boy" with Ilan Bluestone's pulsating "Big Ben." Where there's Anjunabeats, there's also Enhanced: Daun Giventi's entrancing "Sutra" and Alex Klingle's absolutely rocking "Epilogue" wrecked it. Group Therapy Radio favorite "All Shades of Sky" by Kenneth Thomas also made a guest appearance.

The trance duo played recent releases like anthem-to-be "am2pm," Alex Di Stefano's remix of "So Get Up," and the disappointingly-so-get-up-sounding Cosmic Gate Third Contact Remix of legendary trance anthem "Exploration of Space." I personally prefer the Back2Future Remix of "Exploration of Space"...Cosmic Gate, y u do dis.  Nothing says happy times like a Cosmic Gate Mashup of David Gravell and Nic Chagall's remixes of Dash Berlin's epic "Man on the Run."

"Killed it."

It goes without saying: if Cosmic Gate is coming to your town, you better run.
