When discussing the American dubstep movement, there are a few big names that come to mind. Sure there is the given – Skrillex. But the man who put Skrillex on the map – took him under his wing when he was just a little Sonny Moore Padawan – is John Dadzie, better known as 12th Planet. 12th was making dub before brostep was even a word. Rolling Stone even named him the “Los Angeles dubstep god”. His record label SMOG has been a mainstay of the movement since 2008. Whether you knew it or not, 12th Planet has had a major hand in shaping what the EDM scene is today.
This week, EDM.com premiered 12th’s newest single out on SMOG, a filthy collaboration with another of dub’s heavy hitters – LUMBERJVCK. 12th Planet and LUMBERJVCK have been running together a lot over the past year, and this is only the first product we’ve seen from their collaborations.
The new tune, Name Bran, is all thrills and no fills. The heat calls for no need of a synthy melodic lead or experimental song structure. The intense sound design and fierce percussion arrangement do well on their own to deliver listeners a true banger. The song takes its name from samples of a man talking about his “name bran[d]” everything, which is apparently “how you jungle in Jamaica.”
