You've been hearing about and seeing this turquoise-haired mystery girl for the past few months. But who is Mija? And why does she hang out with Skrillex so much? (Envy talking.) Have you ever heard of being in the right place at the right time? That is how Mija's story begins...
Coming out of Phoenix, AZ, Mija, born Amber Giles, started DJing about 4 years ago and it was only after this past year that she decided to start producing. Flashback to 5:30 in the morning at Bonnaroo 2014. You're headed to see Mija play but you arrive at the Burning Man art car, Kalliope, to an exhilarating surprise: Skrillex is spinning right along side her. Moments before, Sonny had ASKED HER to play a b2b sunrise set, and who in their right mind would turn that down? In an interview with LXVXLS she describes it as, "The whole thing was really surreal. I didn’t think too much in the moment, I was just so excited to play. It wasn’t until the following day that it really sank in. It was a game changer for sure.” Since then, OWSLA has taken a keen interest in her, housing her first release with Ghastly featuring Lil Jon, Crank It. This experience, along with a won mix competition to play on the Black Butter Records stage at TomorrowWorld, has built a solid foundation for her future in this industry. Her 'Fk a genre' motto and attitude allow her to explore the endless boundaries of music, drawing motivation and inspiration from the OWSLA squad and beyond.
Earlier this year, making her debut in New York City, Mija brought an uproar to Webster Hall as she laid down a powerful opening set for Tchami. This Memorial Day weekend she'll be featured on Webster Hall's stage at Mysteryland USA. If you didn't get the chance to see her before (and even if you did) make sure to stop by on Sunday to witness the magic. Catch her while she's fresh; it's only up from here.
