Moon Boots Returns to Verboten for Residency Launch [8.15.15]

August 12, 2015 -

Sydney Jow

Last February I had the insane pleasure of seeing Moon Boots perform for the French Express Label Showcase (part of Verboten's Mysteryland USA series). It was hands down one of the best and most exhilarating shows I've ever seen at Wythe Ave's warehouse inspired venue. This week, the intergalactic king of funk will be returning to launch his Verboten Residency, and you best believe he'll be coming in with a bang.

Pete Dougherty (that's our spaceman sensation's real name) is one of my favorite artists for one key reason - his music makes you feel damn good. And when I say damn good, I mean DAMN GOOD. The ferocious desire to dance is inevitable; even through headphones on a packed, silent train, you can't help but bob your head from side to side! In conjunction with Verboten's massive overhead disco ball - this night will play out more like a dream than high-def funktastic reality. Last time we saw him, not only was the venue packed to capacity, but the show proved to be as energetic as it was lovely; the walls were literally vibrating with rhapsodic disco vibes.

When you see a Moon Boots set that are a few things you can be sure to expect: an ear-to-ear smile all night long (his music makes you feel so damn good), an all-engulfing passionate warmth of pure FUNK, and of course, a night full of dancing until your feet fall off.

So what has our favorite astronaut of groove been up to since? Firstly, he has been putting out a string of completely mental releases - the type of tracks that make your hips sway as you side step under the bright lights of city nights - pure musical euphoria. Check out my two favorites: "Utopia" and "Magic". He has also put out Vol 2 of Backyard Boogie - a Moon Boots exclusively curated mix that serves heavy servings of marvel-worthy vibes.

Also performing will be Garrett David and special guest Kenny Dope. David, a Chicago-based producer is one half of the duo Bell Boys and predominantly mixes house and funk with instrumentals. Best known as Smart Bar's resident DJ in the heart of the windy city, this will be Garrett's first time performing at Verboten.

Special guest Kenny Dope is best known for his affinity to mix an eclectic array of genres - from funk and disco to hip hop breaks to house and techno. Mr. Dope (that's fun to say, now isn't it) has toured around the world from New York to Ibiza; his most recent mixes can be found on his Soundcloud page. It will be extremely interesting to see if he decides to blend his genre repertoire with that of Moon Boots Saturday night, or if he'll go full Mr. Dope and pull a few tricks up his sleeve. This will most definitely be an event for the books.

Dance on, my friends! See you Saturday night!
