Nowadays, more and more successful people are opening up about how fame is not a miracle cure for mental health issues; the battle continues for many behind the press shots and paychecks. Krysta Youngs is no exception to this human condition, and in her new single “Mental Breakdown” she opens up about her own personal struggles, complete with a music video that perfectly represents it’s theme of “loving someone who isn’t right for you”.
The tune is a paragon of Krysta Youngs’ incredible songwriting skills. Her voice is silky but expressive as she shows off her vocal range with an addictive melody in the verses and pre-chorus. The chorus is then carried by a brilliantly arranged mosaic of vocal chops, having a cadence that jumps octaves and switches note duration in a way that almost sounds like a soul arguing with itself. Beneath it is a euphonic concoction of tropical-inspired percussion, horns, and a groovy bassline, sounding off with all of the remaining affection still flowing through her frustrated heart.
Youngs is already a very accomplished songwriter and will without a doubt rise to greater heights, so keep her on your watchlist.
