I'll give you a moment to catch your breath. Let me repeat, Deadmau5, aka Joel Zimmerman, will be playing at Verboten on June 6, 2015.
Mau5 fans rejoice, the one and only king of synth is returning to New York City for a behemoth of a show. For any die-hard Deadmau5 fans, we all know Joel has been on a sort of hiatus for quite some time. Besides a random free show in Queens last October, the masked mastermind has been M.I.A. in the east coast club scene for what seems like forever. But fear not, Mr. Zimmerman has decided to grace our eager, hungry ears with his talents, and at my favorite club, VERBOTEN, no less.
Deadmau5's performance is a part of the "Governor's Ball After Dark" parties, joining the likes of Chromeo and Marina & The Diamonds as official afterparties in various locations around New York City. But for many like me, this is much more than just an after-event for the Governor's Ball Festival. This is the unofficial return of the Mau5 to the club scene, a day we've been waiting for far too long. Of course in the past few months, Joel has been playing a slew of huge festivals, but when was the last time we saw him headline an intimate club setting? I predict that the performance will be reminiscent of Deadmau5's "unhooked" shows, which were intermittently sprinkled throughout his Meowingtons Hax Tour. No cube, no giant visual productions, no Mau5 head - just Zimmerman and a mixer; and to be honest, that's all you really need.
For those who have been fortunate to experience Deadmau5 stripped to the core, with nothing but turntables and skill, you're probably shaking with excitement just about now. And for those who haven't? I'll let you in on a little secret -- it's like nothing you've ever encountered. It is in no way your typical, play-out-the-classics-because-your-a-big-name talent show. For the Mau5, its about showcasing pure precocity and performing at a level that other producers can't even dream of achieving. Without the massive stage production, sans the novelty of a hulking Mau5 head bouncing up and down, you get to see Joel for what he really is -- a meticulous, brilliant, musical genius.
Verboten please stock up on tissues, the amount of tears shed over Strobe will be aggressive.
