Let’s talk about free education – and no, it has nothing to do with tonight’s Democratic Debate. Are you an aspiring music producer who has been lurking YouTube channels for hours of production tutorials, frustrated that you’re not finding the specific knowledge that you crave? It might be time to go back to school, and Icon Collective’s one-year scholarship for their “Icon Online” program might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Established in 2005, Icon is an independent music production school located in Burbank, California that focuses on electronic music. Their curriculum includes classes on how to use Ableton Live, Logic Pro, songwriting and arranging, as well as music business and much more. In a promotional video released today, Icon’s Industry Advisor Nik Cherwink - who you may also know as the manager for James Egbert and Sullivan King – says the school “dives deep into important topics that every modern day producer needs to know in order to produce music at the highest professional level.” Nik’s claim is substantiated when you take a look at their alumni roster; Icon is responsible for cultivating the likes of Slander, Kayzo, Protohype, Sullivan King, SNBRN, Jauz, MAKJ, and more.
It’s clear that this isn’t just some run-of-the-mill music certification program. Aaron Perez, recipient of the scholarship in 2012 says in the video:
“Being a part of the collective, whether you’re here in the building or whether you’re doing it online, it’s very much a community and a family.”
In order to qualify for the scholarship you must simply create a video that is 3 minutes long or less, and describe why you would be a great addition to the collective. Specifically, you are asked to describe your vision, your story, and why you should be the next recipient. Considering the class spans a whole year and is valued at $18,000, you might want to start calling your closest friend with a GoPro!
