Hear New Jim James: "Know Til Now"

November 14, 2012 -

Dominick Knowles

Yo ok so for those of you who are unaware, Jim James (lead vocalist/shredologist for My Morning Jacket) is dropping a solo record in February. Here's the first single, "Know Til Now," a 6-and-a-half minute abstract pop tune that takes its cues from 70s R&B and 90s Wayne Coyne in equal measure.

I don't think James picked up his guitar once over the track's sprawling 6 minutes and 27 seconds, and the production value sort of makes me think he pulled at least one Rick Ross before hopping onto Pro Tools. Also, the entire music video is just him standing with his back to the camera, gesticulating intermittently in what appears to be a leisure suit. And if these factors aren't bizarre enough, the record is called Regions of Light and Sound of God and is based on God's Man, a 1929 graphic novel by Lynd Ward about artistic suffering and true love or something.

Transcending any other stupid/weird shit that I might say about all this, James made his own statement about the intent of the record:

"I wanted the album to sound like it came from a different place in time. Perhaps sounding as if it were the past of the future, if that makes any sense—like a hazy dream that a fully-realized android or humanoid capable of thought might have when it reminisces about the good old days of just being a simple robot."

So there you have it. I'm just going to leave this here and back tactfully away. It actually is very good. I promise.
