Just about a week ago after suddenly deleting his SoundCloud, Joel Zimmerman released his first single as deadmau5 in almost two years. This may have went unnoticed between all the twitter antics with Marshmello and what not, but we should not let this slip through the cracks. Solely because this new tune is not your average track that you're used to hearing by him. The song is entitled Snowcone, and very much like an actual snowcone, it is very chilled out. Take a listen.
After listening to this, I want you to think about the musicality and overall gravity of this production. The waviness of the beginning synths create a very weird vibe, since the sounds are tuned to a lower frequency than what we are used to hearing. Then suddenly a very chill hip hop-esque drum pattern starts to play in a way that makes you think a rapper is about to start spitting on the track (it honestly fits right in with anything from Tycho's album Dive). The rest of the tune contains flutters of analog synths, carried along gently by the laid back nature of the beat until the song comes to a close.
When a seasoned artist and music icon such as deadmau5 releases a tune of this nature pushing the boundaries of his sound further and further, this usually is a precursor to something much bigger. Could there be a new album on the way with tunes similar to this or like that "Cthulhu Twerks" edit of his magnum opus Strobe (which is now nowhere to be found)? I guess we will find out soon...
