This past weekend, San Bernardino saw Insomniac's largest installation of their enchanting SoCal event, Beyond Wonderland. For two nights, visitors explored the hidden corners of this captivating world which included art installations, theatrical performers, and, of course, a variety of stages (hidden and known) dedicated to the auditory and visual senses.
The familiar sight of colorful lights and the ornately decorated lake greeted the 110,000 headliners who entered the sold-out NOS Event Center on March 22nd and 23rd. For ten hours, guests immersed themselves in the interactive world created for them. With more than 90 artists, the sounds of house, techno, bass, hardstyle, trance, and more could be heard emanating throughout the event.
Situated along the mushroom-lined path were Beyond's four vibrant stages: Queen's Domain, Mad Hatter's Castle, Caterpillar's Garden, and Cheshire Woods. On Friday, the madness was brought to us by Bassrush, Dreamstate, and mau5trap, who hosted Cheshire Woods for their very first time. On the lineup for day one were huge hitters including Armin Van Buuren, Rezz, Ganja White Ninja, Aly & Fila, Liquid Soul, i_o, and No Mana. Not to mention, Friday also saw the Beyond Wonderland debut performance of Testpilot, Deadmau5's techno alias. His closing set guided listeners down the rabbit hole with his deep, dark melodies and beats acting as the guides.
Day two came in strong with yet another impressive list of artists bringing the heat. At Queen's Domain, Deorro, Moksi, and Joyryde got the crowd pumped with the dirty bass lines their fans know and love. Meanwhile, over at Mad Hatter's Castle, Cray, Eprom, and Someone's Daughter were making sure listeners had something that they could bang their heads to and at Caterpillar's Garden, Basscon was hosting some of hardstyle's most prominent figures such as Darren Styles, DJ Isaac, and the genre's leading ladies- DJ Stephanie and Lady Faith. Serving up Saturday's house music was Cheshire Woods, hosted by the Insomniac record label. At this stage, the likes of Bijou, J. Worra, and Wax Motif supplied house heads with the booty shaking vibrations that they craved. The set at Cheshire Woods that cannot go without mentioning, however, is the one thrown down by Morelia, Insomniac's recently discovered gem. He made his Insomniac debut on the Nocturnal lineup after winning the Discovery Project contest with his song "Vibrate" and has since continued to exponentially grow his fanbase and prove to audiences that he is a force to be reckoned with. Those who caught his opening set at Beyond heard a spew of unreleased music and got just a taste of what is to come from this young, LA-based producer.
The 9th edition of Beyond Wonderland brought with it the familiar sense of love and union that Insomniac is known to bring to their events, however this year also brought with it a multitude of surprises. From a secret drum & bass set by Kaskade, to a tech house set from Carnage, and unexpected artist announcements for upcoming performances, this celebration provided something for music lovers across the spectrum of genres. Not to mention, this event broke all previous ticketing records in its history and after a year such as this one, it can be expected that it will continue in this same vein for Beyond 2020.
