Beyoncé Redefines the Half-Time Show

Beyoncé, as made clear in my earlier article yesterday, is a goddess. This fact was only reinforced by todays Super Bowl half-time show, in which she absolutely killed it. Half-time shows, despite the hype (or perhaps because of it), are often disappointing because the stage and crow overwhelm the artists. For Beyoncé this wasn't a problem.

Beyoncé started the show with a medley of her hits, working through "Love On Top," "Crazy In Love" (my personal favorite and Bey staple), "End of Time," and "Baby Boy." The stage was framed with the flaming profiles of two women's faces, and Beyoncé entered on a rising platform. She whipped out various notable dance moves from her music videos, from the "Single Ladies" sequence to the "Crazy In Love" strut and booty pop.

However, for me the highlight was when Beyoncé brought out Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland for a Destiny's Child reunion. The three of them onstage were visibly overjoyed and at ease, and seeing them together brought back memories of my favorite songs from elementary school. They moved through "Bootylicious" and "Independent Woman" before performing "Single Ladies" with the whole group of back-up dancers.

Beyoncé finished with "Halo" (which I made a serious error in forgetting to include in my article earlier today), which left me speechless. She exudes this extraordinary power and grace that's almost overwhelming to watch.

She's one of my favorite artists of all time, and watching her perform so well on the largest national stage made me proud, for lack of a better word. Ahead of her performance today, when asked if she would be lip syncing, she reportedly replied "I will absolutely be singing live. I am well-rehearsed. This is what I was born to do." Too true, Beyoncé blew any other performer out of the water.
