Welcome back to our Vol. 8 of our weekly series Beats & Pieces, this week curated by Milli Encarnacion. This week, we are featuring some really dark tracks from the likes of Diagenetic Origin, as well as some future beats from our boys Oshan and Daktyl. Along with that we have some funky tunes from Bodhi and Claptone for you to dance to. Discover and enjoy the freshest tracks below.
The UK spawns a magnificent roster of house and techno artists, with Bodhi being no exception. Their latest release, Howler, is a two-track EP that gives deep respect to melodious synths, a la The Chemical Brothers. Reminiscent of the Brothers' 1997 track, "Block Rockin' Beats," the title track of the Howler EP is catchy enough for those with modern taste, while still clinging to an air of nostalgic eccentricity.
2. Oshan – Dafty (feat. Krue)
Don't sleep on Sydney. Australia's bustling capital has laid claim to the waves across the Pacific for quite a few years now (Flume, anyone?). Dafty is a mellow, look-out-on-the-balcony anthem that embodies the future bass sound. Krue's whispy vocals top it off with sensual flair, like a cool autumn breeze on the eve of Halloween. If the production sounds familiar to you, look no further – Flume's partner-in-crime, Naderi, helped to mix it all down.
3. Diagenetic Origin – The Awakening
Joseph Capriati is into it. So are Paco Osuna, Chris Leibing, Dubfire, and hundreds of other techno producers. It's a slower-paced track – it veers toward experimental – yet the Berlin-based tattoo artist-cum-DJ keeps you glued in with a progressive rhythm built atop a climactic bassline. The entirety of Diagenetic Origin's Golden Age EP is worth a listen if you're into unapologetic, relentless, and atypical techno.
4. Claptone – The Only Thing
"I can't take my mind off of you," begin the lyrics. There's something about that gold-beaked mask that keeps us locked into Claptone's grip. The anonymous house maestro clued fans in to his upcoming debut album with the release of "The Only Thing." Lovesick, melancholy, and keyboard-ridden in true Claptone fashion, the single proves that the musician's eventful 2015 was only a warm-up. Look out for his Halloween Masquerade if you'll be in Brooklyn this October 31st; the vibes you catch upon seeing him live are unmatched.
5. Major Lazer - Be Together (feat. Wild Belle) [Daktyl Remix]
Daktyl has flown under the radar for most of 2015, but with his remix of the popular Major Lazer track, "Be Together," he's finally surfacing. The track dips into a minimal bassline as Wild Belle croons her sorrows, then drives into a trap-esque hook with elements of modern R&B thrown into the mix. Catch him at Webster Hall in New York on November 20 in support of Giraffage and Slow Magic.
