Beats & Pieces Vol. XIV

January 15, 2016 -

Louis Garcia

Hello and welcome back to our 14th edition of Beats & Pieces, brought to you this week by Ocean Roulette. At this point I am following over a thousand artists on Soundcloud so I really do not know what to expect when I visit the page. I usually like to dig deep, meaning, I’ll find an artist that I like, see what tracks they’ve liked, see what tracks that artist has reposted, and so on until I come across the rarest of gems. This week I put together a diverse list of tracks from artists and friends that I admire, hope you enjoy!

1. jackLNDN - Firing Line

Firing Line is a track that deceives the listener at first with its generic house structure. The piano stabs and house drums feel all too similar, it isn’t until the quirky lead synth begins to slide into the atmosphere that we notice something a bit more strange. The vibe remains dancey but in an organic way, something that reminds us of older Metronomy records. The track is of a tech house decent yet it fluctuates into much more with the vocoded synth chords and bouncing sounds. The melodic content of the track separates it from tech house yet its minimalism would allow it to fit smack in the middle of any opening set.

2. Reid Stefan vs Debbie Deb - Lookout Weekend

Debbie Deb’s classic 80’s club hit was revamped recently by Reid Stefan for the modern dancefloor and we couldn’t have been more impressed with the outcome. Reid Stefan keeps a vintage feel with the laser sounds and 808 beats, and the thing is it sounds huge, way bigger than the original. It comes off sort of like Jamie Lidell’s last record, a futuristic 80’s dance party. Besides, wasn’t this decade all about the sounds and style of the future? It’s cool seeing that 30 years later a ton of artists are beginning to touch back on those themes with a new vision.

3. Miami Horror - Cellophane (Moullinex Remix)

After seeing Miami Horror on the recent Coachella lineup I decided to check back in on his work. I came across this dreamy house rendition of one of their newer tracks featuring Aaron Miller and Gavin Turek. This Cellophane remix has a huge sound with the dense layers of acoustic percussion that is backed by a crisp analog bass line. The vocal melody is a catchy piece of work in of itself and it later floats along the track’s progression with the halftime variation that adds to the surrealism.

4. Ben Maxwell - Sensations feat. Cresce

Ben Maxwell comes at us with a dirty underground trap sound on his latest piece with Cresce. Sensations fits into the banging minimal, and sometimes freaky, sounding trap music that has been literally putting all of the 2013 festival trap to rest in the past year. In this new track, rather than lasers and Luger samples we’re being hit with precise drum production that drive the track with odd grooves. Sensations’ overall time feels all too short yet both producers somehow manage to fit a mystical vibe in the breakdown and a juicy melodic drop towards the end. Check it out now on Fete's collective’s page.

5. NuAlias & Trypt - Trippin’

We love it when house music goes futuristic and funky. Trippin’ comes off as a spacey jackin’ house track, with ominous synths that hover across the intro. The reverb drenched build is soon cut with the bass heavy drop that shows off a tight arrangement with the extraterrestrial bass dabs and punchy drum arrangement. The minimal attitude and obscure sound design makes this a must for anyone looking to make a club get weird.

Bonus: Inspired and the Sleep - Die Slow (Music Video)

San Diego based Inspired and the Sleep transforms their Die Slow track into a psych dream with this music video that they put out this week. The imagery depicts underwater creatures created in an abstract watercolored world reminding us of our favorite childhood book The Rainbow Fish. The animation fits perfectly with Inspired’s lush arrangement of dreamy pop music that we cannot get enough of. Checkout the rest of their Eyelid Kid EP here.

Super Double Extra Bonus: Chance The Rapper - Cocoa Butter Kisses (Ocean Roulette's Future Dance Cover)

Of course I’m gonna include this Chance The Rapper cover that I put out this week but I mean.. wouldn’t you? This track was recorded in the Summer when I was living at my parent’s house and once I came out to live by my University I quickly linked up with a vocalist and saxophonist that I knew from school. Everything came together pretty quickly afterwards and I’m excited to finally share it with the world after having it on that yung Soundcloud private link for so long. Hope you guys enjoy!
