Athletixx is Taking Over Webster Hall

Athletixx weren't always the stylishly sporty squad of musicians that we know them as now. Before their official beginnings in 2014, the four-member crew that is comprised of Falcons, Hoodboi, Promnite, and Kittens, were just a few die-hard club music fans who had a penchant for streetwear and good production skills. Really, really good production skills. So how far has their unique blend of Jersey club and hip-hop come since the minting of Athletixx?

Let's start with their inaugural release together: All-Stars Vol. 1. The crew was freshly co-signed by A-trak, who had also just welcomed all four artists to his Fools Gold roster. Two years later, All-Stars Vol. 1 has proven its worth as a timeless musical craft. It lifts off with a remix of Rico Love's "They Don't Know" before continuing into booty-bouncing oblivion for the next half-hour. Other popular artists who got the treatment on the energetic mixtape include Drake and Chris Brown, whose vocals are chopped and screwed against an infamous Jersey beat.

2015 saw even more growth for the four burgeoning musical luminaries. Each individual member created his or her own mix for Diplo's radio show, collectively known as the "Diplo & Friends Athletixx Takeover." Each mix, capping off at just about a half-hour for each producer, tours listeners through the diverging styles that influence the sound of Athletixx as a whole. Hoodboi weaves in and out of a lively blend of R&B samples, while Promnite takes on a darker tone. Kittens' mix takes on a slightly aggressive, trap-like sensibility. Falcons said to DB in an interview last August that he "was a hip-hop guy before anything, so that is kind of my core," and his background in rap and R&B shows in his section of the takeover.

Athletixx will continue to run on full-speed this year, with no signs of slowing down anytime soon. They spent a large part of 2015 touring individually and together, including the Fools Gold showcase at SXSW, where they played alongside Fetty Wap and Bosco. Tomorrow, January 8th, you can catch the crew in full at Webster Hall in New York City. Come in your best joggers, track jackets, and casual sneakers - it's going to be a long, sweaty night.
