Four years ago today the DJ community lost a true legend of the industry. DJ AM or Adam Goldstein, from Philly, is considered one of the best turntablists to have ever lived. Today his style of mixing can still be heard by some of the greats including A-TRAK. The last year of his life was filled with many highs and lows. Both AM and Travis Barker teamed up to put together a truly remarkable mixtape called "Fix Your Face VOL 1.," which can be listend to and downloaded for free below. The mix includes such an incredible array of artists from Biggie Smalls, to Daft Punk, to Kanye, and everything in between that you can imagine.
This was one of the first major collaboration between two different genres that was one of the first landmark events of electronic music becoming mainstream. Shortly after the release of the mixtape AM and Barker were performing together in the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards. The following year was when Deadmau5 rocked the world with his iconic cube on television for the first time.
A couple weeks later on September 19th Barker and AM were in a horrific plane crash in South Carolina after performing a free show for 10,000 people. Both of them barely survived with 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over their bodies, while four other people (two passengers and the two pilots) were not as fortunate. Remarkably by New Years the duo was performing again in LA.
In 2009 Goldstein was found dead in his New York City apartment after his sponsor and manager were worried that something happened to him after not hearing from him for a few days. Adam was a recovering drug addict who was looking to become a leader to help other hollywood addicts.
Today DJ Kevin Scott released five live mixes of DJ AM performing around the country, all are proof of how talented he was and why was such a key player in turning what the EDM culture has become today. My favorite one is his 2006 performance at Venom. A-Trak said it perfectly today in an Instagram post of him and AM, "...Wish he could see where DJing is now."
ONE LOVE ADAM!
