A Tale of Two Ravers: A Last Minute Rendezvous to The Late Show with Zedd, Foxes and Alvin Risk

January 9, 2013 -

So do I have a story for you guys. What’s better than a last minute David Letterman Show featuring Zedd? Well, I guess can't really think of much.

Last Thursday my friend and fellow writer, Ashlyn (1/2 AB RAVE Girls) and I were lucky enough to snag tickets to The Late Show with David Letterman featuring Zedd and Foxes where they performed a rendition of their song, "Clarity". This was no ordinary performance of “Clarity” that you’d expect to see at a music festival or show, instead it was an acoustic version with a string sextet, Zedd on the piano, and Foxes on vocals with a surprise back up vocals by Alvin Risk! Recently, Zedd revealed the acoustic cover on YouTube.

Zedd feat. Foxes - Clarity (Acoustic Version)

My adventure began on the first day of the new year after seeing a Facebook status by Zedd. At the time, I wasn't really sure what to think of the status, as I was half awake looking at my phone just after getting in from Webster Hall's NYE party with Tommy Trash. It took a few minutes, but it eventually sunk in that Zedd was actually going to be performing on Letterman, so I knew I had to go.

zeddAfter looking into EVERY possible way I could get tickets: entering online or in person, and or calling at 11am on the day of the show, I immediately signed up on the Internet. However, after applying online, I begrudgingly thought to myself how unreliable The Late Show website and the Internet most likely is. So, I went ahead to backup plan mode.

The next day I met up with Ashlyn to write her first blog post on DADA Life's show at Dada Land in Brooklyn, while talking to her partner in crime and other half, Brianna via Skype to finish the article before I went to the Late Show to attempt to pick up tickets. Of course when I got to the Late Show box office, I was only disappointed to find they were closed. So, the next morning I knew I had sign up in person at 10am or call at 11am.

IMG_9811That morning as I was signing the audience to get in, I was wondering which time the show was, because there was not one, but two tapings that day. Not wanting to be wrong, I just asked the guy directly who was working if Zedd was going to be on the first or second taping that day, and he indirectly told me the later show was not for today. Easy enough. However, I decided I might as well just call at 11am and go on standby. I think I called about 20 times, and finally got a connection. I was on the list! I was originally supposed to go with my friend, Avery, but she was sick, so I texted Ashlyn. She called ten minutes later and somehow had a number in front of me. I don't get it, but who cares?! We were both going to David Letterman to see Zedd and Foxes!

zeddThroughout the day Zedd and Foxes tweeted they were playing. We are still convinced that not a lot of people knew this was going down.

Screen shot 2013-01-06 at 7.55.36 PMNow, it’s not that were not fans of this show but honestly the entire time David was interviewing Regis Philbin or exchanging banter with Paul Shaffer and the band all we could think is, “When is Zedd coming on? Come on Anton!!” Finally, we see the stage being set up for the performance. We got slightly excited as the piano was being pulled out, as you may know Zedd is a classically trained pianist. After we saw the string sextet walk out, we saw Zedd not too far behind wearing his classic leather jacket and flannel, and Foxes in the beautiful white dress which we think she wears in the upcoming "Clarity" video" (featured below in the post!). None the less, Ashlyn and I had a double take at the backup vocalist, and simultaneously looked at each other after realizing who he was, saying, "Isn't that Alvin Risk?!" We were so excited for the show that we could barely keep still before the performance. After looking around the room we figured 99.9% of the people had no idea who the performers even were, as we just had a dumb grin on our faces with happiness from anticipation. Despite that statistic, we hoped after the performance that not only the audience, but people at home watching the show would begin to have a new found appreciation for electronic dance music, as well as for Zedd and Foxes.

IMG_9845We felt Letterman was being good after announcing Zedd and the CD, but we wish he had his information straight, and should have been notified, that Foxes is featured in the song, and that Alvin Risk was the guest vocalist. Anyways, once the performance began, the crowd became quite. The feeling of the song was truly amplified when being paired alongside a string sextet and piano. It was beautiful. Zedd's performance on the piano was flawless, and the combination of a live performance of Foxes melodic voice gave me goosebumps. There are not many songs or singers that I've seen make an emotional connection with a song or to the performance, but Foxes is someone who I've found is blessed to have that skill. I didn't know Alvin Risk could sing either, but I was pleasantly surprised to find he not only can DJ, but a voice to boot. Overall, the performance nothing short of amazing, and I'm glad I tried as hard as I did to get tickets!

As the end of the performance came, I couldn't help stop laughing. David Letterman was a site to watch with some things he says. The way he said to Foxes, "Hello Foxes, "How are you, Foxes (with the inflection in his voice rising)?" And him telling Zedd with a a wink and a nod in German (I looked this up online!), "auf Wiedersehen" either "goodbye" or "until we meet again," Letterman seemed quite uncomfortable, as he had his arms crossed, and almost hurried how he talked. What really cracked me up was when Letterman stated to Risk, "I love the scarf," after telling him how did a nice job. However, just because the show was over, the fat lady didn't sing, and as fellow ravers and fans, we knew it was time to wait outside to tell them how much of an awesome job they did and hopefully get a picture. Once we got outside, the first thing we saw was Anton's (Zedd) car, so we knew he didn't leave yet. Sometimes it helps being a fan and knowing the DJ's actual name haha.

IMG_9820As soon as we began to wait the security guard told us to leave - that only media could be there. So we had to cross the street (at least for now). That was until we saw Alvin Risk walk out, we crossed the street and told him nice job, and how we chuckled when Letterman told him "nice scarf." Yes, we are still mentally children, and laugh at things like this. After taking a picture with him, he asked if we were going to Florida to see his next show, where he was doing a pre-party for Holy Ship that was just about to set sail. I told him, "No, I wish, but one of my friends was going (Rochelle, cough), and that we wished we could be in the warmth to go.

alvin riskAfter Alvin Risk left my phone died, but thankfully Ashlyns phone still worked, and we made friends with someone just as eccentric as us about EDM, Geraldine. After walking back to the other side of the street, Geraldine told us how she just got back from Lights All Night in Texas, a three day music festival that was held over the time of New Years. I really wanted to go to that too, especially since one of my close friends, Espo went, someone who has truly helped me learn the EDM scene in NYC after introducing me to his friends, and also his coworkers at EDM NYC. After talking for a few minutes, Geraldine began to show us some awesome, but slightly embaressing pictures of her in a bacon costume! She told us, "Well, I like bacon. Zedd likes bacon. Everyone should like bacon." I told her she was right, and then I just hear screaming, "Foxes!"

zeddI didn't know what to do, she was walking to the car, and I couldn't say hi! I thought for a second. The only thing to do was to run. So I ran. I felt like Forrest Gump, except I hate running. Actually I can't remember the last time I worked out, because I consider going to shows multiple times a week, jumping up and down is a good enough workout for me (PREACH). Needless to say, I began to run down the block to catch up to that darn car. All I could hear was, (in a dreamy British accent) "Oh My God, he is running, he must really want to meet me! Foxes said. Oh I ran, and lady luck was on my side, there was a red light, and the car slowed down. If I can trust one thing about New York (I'm from Philadelphia), is there will always be traffic, or annoying red lights when you don't want them. But I have never been so happy to see a red light in my life. ANYWAYS, I got to the car, and Foxes peeked her head out of the car like a a cute little puppy, and asked if I wanted a hug. All I could do was smile, and then I gave her a hug. Not just because the hug was from her, but it was probably one of the top 10 hugs I've received ever. Maybe it was because it was Foxes. I can't lie very well. After she asked for my name, I replied, and I gave her the bracelet that I randomly bought when I was in a Christmas market the other day. I told her to tweet me later, and I was in for a surprise, especially thinking she would have forgotten my name.

IMG_9391After, Ashlyn Geraldine and I waited around until Zedd came out, and there he was! We ran across the street again, and before even asking to take a picture he smiled at us and said, "Hey! Did you guys get to see the show?"

"Yes!" we replied, and after talking for a little, I traded him a piece of my one of a kind Daily-Beat kandi I made a few weeks prior which I've been wearing to every show I've gone too! When I asked him if I could give him kandi, he told me, "Of course, of course!" He seemed so focus and happy when I gave it to him.I love this picture!

After trading kandi, Ashlyn and I took a picture with Zedd (he is slightly blurry), and then I got one with just him and I. As Ashlyn put our trip to Letterman, "It was stalking at it's finest" waiting to get the photos, and trading kandi with him!
