Grum And Fehrplay Stir Up Magic At Exchange LA

On Saturday July 30th, progressive house icons Grum and Fehrplay took the stage at the former LA Stock Exchange building in downtown Los Angeles. In what was a true clubbing experience, they showcased their arsenal of emphatic risers and driving, bass-ridden beats – a perfect fit for the dark halls of this famous LA club.

First up was Fehrplay, who set the vibes with a unique amalgam of dark, hypnotic, and moody sounds. The Norwegian producer spun an assortment of new tracks and his vast discography which includes releases on Pryda Friends, mau5trap, Anjunabeats, and most recently, Armada Trice.

Half-way through Fehrplay’s set, we received word that Grum’s flight into LA had been delayed as a result of weather issues in Canada. Fehrplay handled the impromptu extension of his performance with class and skill, continuing to enrapture the audience with his track choices and transitions.

Finally, as the clock struck 1:30 am, Graeme Shepherd AKA Grum, stepped up to the decks and chugging basslines metamorphosed into uplifting and energetic leads. I’ve been a fan of Grum’s music since he broke out onto the scene with his “Heartbeats” album that skyrocketed to the No.1 album on iTunes. His brand of appropriated disco, funk, and 80’s pop appealed both to my nostalgia and melody-craving disposition. Since then, his music has changed considerably, stepping into the realms of heavy, euphoric club anthems, but he has still managed to retain that characteristic “80’s” sentimentality which has made his productions entirely distinctive. There was a palpable increase in the space’s energy with Grum’s introduction, and he played the closing set to a packed dance floor in what was most definitely, a memorable night.
