Nick's Picks: The Sounds of 2013

December 27, 2013 -

Nick

The year 2013 was a cool year for my ears. A lot of groundbreaking, forward thinking, game changing, whatever you wanna call it music was served. I'm as hungry as ever for what 2014 has cooking in the oven. For now, here's a list of my favorite sounds that came out in the past 12 months.

MAT ZO – DAMAGE CONTROL

Damage-Control

Never listened to Mat Zo before this album. Never listened to much trance either. This isn't trance. This is awesome. With disco, garage, trap, purple, psychedelic, eastern and trance influences, no track really fit into a concrete genre, and that’s what makes this both a standout product of this years forward thinking EDM catalogues, and a timeless piece of art.

Dog Blood - Coachella 2013 Mix

Coachella-Weekends065

Pregames to this? Killer. The gym? Destroyed. Pre-show parties? BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL SHOW. Boys Noize and Skrillex do it too right with this onslaught of aggressive, adrenaline jacking rave.

Disclosure - You & Me (Baauer Remix)

I cannot think about Camp Bisco this year without thinking about how hard the crowd blasted off when Baauer dropped this.

Ben Pierece - What I might Do

Mhmm.

Mt Eden - Walking on Air EP

CS2220946-02A-BIG

A real delight to see these guys push out some actual releases this year.

Kidnap Kid - Summer Mix

The years perfect summer mix, "best served with sunshine and cold drinks." F*ck yeah it was.

Avicii - True

The kid killed it. Read my review here.

Teddy Killers - Violence EP

Scary f*cking sounds. These guys mess with all things Bass but I think the DnB they put out on this EP is their best work.

Phuture Doom - Phuture Doom

Black. Acid.

Rudimental - Home

This LP brought me right back to my days in London. All forms of UK bass delivered in a smooth, classy, wholesome package.

Disclosure - Settle

f40d167d

Obvi.

Kanye West - Yeezus

Haters can't catch a break.
