While music videos were once a noteworthy novelty, in recent years they’ve become a dime a dozen with countless musicians mobbing the medium. For that reason, it’s rare that I find a well produced piece that catches my attention and entrances my eyes. However, recently the awesome aesthetic of "Astrophe" by Driftwood. found its way to my screen and I couldn’t click away.
The song’s silky smooth soul vibe is paired with a powerful visual aesthetic that provides pensive atmosphere for viewers to contemplate. Intriguing editing and breathtaking shots work together to create a visual landscape laden with emotion and hidden meaning that's sure to have you lost in thought.
Amazingly, this independent Sydney based artist manages to curate the look and feel of a big budget production, while simultaneously eschewing the backing of major labels or outside funding. In fact, this singer / songwriter producers and directs each of his films alongside a small band of friends including Matt Scott Chow and Colored Noyz. Press play and check out their hard work for yourself; and if you’re into what you see there’s more where that came from on their Youtube channel here.
