Don't call it a comeback just yet! Following what has been a relatively quiet year for Deadmau5, the Canadian producer has released a handful of experimental tracks over the last few weeks. After announcing a hiatus from music and deleting his Twitter account, many believed the world of electronic music would be Mau5 free for most of 2016. Fortunately for us, the producer's hiatus has been short lived, with a number of outstanding tracks released this weekend via his fuckmylife SoundCloud page.
Deadmau5' most impressive release, ambiguously titled 'saved', listens like a labor of love for longtime fans. This track is a clear return to the ambient buildups and harmonic drops which made Joel a superstar before "EDM" was a household phrase. Nostalgic of 2008's Random Album Title, 'saved' features eerie synths and a progressive buildup that compare to classics like Faxing Berlin.
For those interested in a newer sound from the journeyman producer, Joel takes two successful shots at remixing classic 90's Hip Hop tracks. His remixes of The Beastie Boys "Hey Fuck You!" (titled "fuck you too) and Jay-Z's "The City is Mine" (the carp is mine) are not only hilariously titled but also well executed. Love him or hate him for his online antics, its great to see Mau5 back in the studio producing quality music. A few weeks ago, Mau5 tweeted "2015 was a really shitty year for electronic music. 2016 isn't looking any better. Someone needs to bring 2012 back." Whether you agree or disagree, here's to hoping his cynicism will yield a masterpiece studio album.
