Beats & Pieces Vol. XXIV

Jacob Piotrowski

Hey guys and welcome back to the twenty-fourth edition of our weekly series Beats & Pieces where we have a new writer curate a playlist showcasing our personal favorite tracks with all of you! Last week we had a very chilled out set of trance tracks but this time around we have another rowdy playlist packed with bass music for all of you out there that enjoy the face-melting, head-banging side of life. With that being said we’ll cut straight to it.

1. G-REX X Tuslo X WILLY P - Boardwalk

To start off we have Boardwalk, an insane collaboration between up-and-coming trap producers G-REX, Tuslo, and Willy P. This track starts off dark and ominous with the lead slowly creeping up in the washed out background. The bass hits you out of nowhere for a short moment to give way to the airy synth and vocals push the song forward. One thing that I really appreciate about this is track is how the trio crafted a track with so much energy while still remaining very minimal in instrumentation which shows a very high level of songwriting ability.

2. Alix Perez & EPROM - Chiron

If you saw EPROM’s set at this year’s Lightning in a Bottle then you witnessed one of the most intense sets of the entire weekend. EPROM is known for his heavy, almost disgusting beats with sound design similar to what you would expect from a producer who teleported here from another galaxy. What you may not have been aware about is his new project with Belgian born Alix Perez who has been breaking boundaries in the drum & bass world for quite some time now. Having teamed up with EPROM however, the two came up with their astonishing EP dubbed Shades which is out now with Alpha Pup Recrods. While I only included my favorite song off of the EP, I highly recommend you all give this ground-breaking project a listen.

3. Nero - Promises (Skrillex & Nero) [QUIX FLIP]

QUIX has become a household name amongst the bass music community and continues to develop with each and every release into a unique style that you can almost instantly identify him with. With his most recent release, a flip of Skrillex’s classic remix of Nero’s Promises, the New Zealand based producer took us quite by surprise with what at first I thought was his most underwhelming work. The flip at first remained largely similar to the first remix and I was left unimpressed with what I mistakenly saw as an attempt to boost social media stats. Sure enough however, the second section of the song came with a drop that had me bouncing all over my room yelling “F**K’IN QUIX DID IT AGAIN!!!”

4. Tuslo x Holly - Hooligan

Being that they are one of my favorite producers at the moment I had to include Tuslo twice considering they also recently put out a fire collaboration with one of the hottest bass producers in the game, Holly. This eclectic track starts out full of dark energy and demonstrates a genuine blend of both Tuslo’s and Holly’s unique styles. While Tuslo has been receiving support from a number of notable artists, Holly’s career just took an exciting turn recently with his debut “Forward” EP coming out on Buygore just a few days ago which I also highly recommend you listen to as a supplement to this playlist.

5. Holly & sumthin sumthin - Keep It Simple

Finally, we have another collaboration between Holly & sumthin sumthin that is a straight-forward banger. With elements of dubstep and trap finely mixed into a perfectly blended hybrid trap that is both interesting and exciting. This track is just one of the endless number of songs that the Portuguese producer has been releasing. I guarantee that you’ll have trouble finding this particular track on his page as he has already put out around 20 new tracks since this came out just a few weeks ago. If you are down under in Australia be sure to catch Holly on his upcoming tour!
