Beats & Pieces Vol. XIII

December 4, 2015 -

Garrett Hoppin

Welcome to the thirteenth edition of Beats & Pieces! Last week we heard from William Cuccurullo of Daily Beat New York who delivered a dope mix of dubstep and trap to launch you into the weekend. Now the task has fallen to me, Garrett Hoppin of DBDC. That's enough writing in the third person, let's get to some music.

1. Keylow - Bruce Lee (Keylow & Lean Quatifah Edit)

Since I am part of the Daily Beat DC team, I wanted to kick off the playlist with a track from DC-based artists, Keylow and Lean Quatifah. This edit of Levan Kali's original does a great job of showcasing the gospel vocals of Kali's original and really, well, lifting them up. Keylow and Lean Quatifah turn the track into an uplifting piece; looping the vocals, adding some extra layers, and leaving the listener with two and a half minutes of urban electronic gospel bliss.

2. Diplo & Sleepy Tom - Be Right There (Boombox Cartel Remix)

If we're being completely honest here, the main reason this post is going up later in the day is because I was waiting for the Be Right There (Remixes) - EP to drop at midnight, and damn am I glad that I did. I chose to share the Boombox Cartel remix because it resonated the most with me, but you cannot go wrong with the all-star, genre-spanning list of artists that contributed to this project: Boombox Cartel, Marc Kinchen, Flava D, Gent & Jawns, Naderi, and Big Fish. This remix stuck out to me because of the delicate treatment of the original chorus juxtaposed with the trap drops brought in by LA-based Boombox Cartel. If you've got some time, make sure to check out the other remixes as well.

3. Kap Slap & Gazzo - Rewind (Radio Edit)

And if we're being extra honest, this track is the other reason I wanted to post the playlist later. Kap Slap and Gazzo have been teasing this track for a while and it's great to finally have it out. It's a fun progressive house track that bumps and builds and if you're not dancing thirty seconds in then you might want to see a doctor. "I can't believe where the summer has gone," is a line we can all identify with as the days get shorter and shorter (not looking at you, DBLA) and this track is definitely going to help fight off the winter blues over the next few months.

4. GTA - Red Lips (feat. Sam Bruno)[Skrillex Remix]

This week, Skrillex posted his remix of GTA's "Red Lips (feat. Sam Bruno)" to his Soundcloud and released the accompanying music video via Apple Music. The remix is a dramatic take on the original, surging with power, that takes the listener on an aural ride. Whereas GTA's original defied genres (it was released as part of Death To Genres, Vol. 1), Skrillex's remix is all dubstep all the time. After a year of Jack Ü trap and trop-house Justin Bieber tracks, it sounds like Skrillex is looking to throw some Bangarang-esque tracks into the mix as well. Make sure to check out the aforementioned music video as well; not the for the feint of heart, it's a fantastic video with a compelling story, awe-inspiring visuals, and equally great choreography and videography.

5. CL - Hello Bitches

Fresh off the summer success of "Doctor Pepper" (hey, might not have been on the radio but I bumped it every day), CL comes out swinging with her latest release, the anthemic "Hello Bitches." Reminiscent of M.I.A. circa "Bad Girls," this English-Korean, self-described "street single" is relentless, propelled forward by CL's vocals and layered with plenty of drum kicks and a hard-hitting "OH" shoutout. The Korean countdown at the end is a nice, quick break before one final round to make sure you know that CL is here to stay. Also worth mentioning is the accompanying dance performance video which features CL, a girl gang of dancers, and some killer street fashion. Oh, and it's directed by Parris Goebel, the choreographer for many pieces of Justin Bieber's PURPOSE: The Movement collection, including the standout "Sorry" dance video.

6. Stromae - Ave Cesaria (Major Lazer Remix)

Another appearance by Diplo on the list because it's not a playlist by me without at least two Diplo projects on it. The Major Lazer treatment of Stromae's "Ave Cesaria" (an ode to the late Cesária Évora) takes an already amazing song — check it out here — and elevates it to a whole other plane, that plane being the realm of dancehall and trap that is Major Lazer.

7. Duke Dumont - Ocean Drive (Hayden James Remix)

If you listened to Duke Dumont's original "Ocean Drive" and wanted more mellow house and less Drive soundtrack, then this is the remix for you. Hayden James delivers the equivalent of "Ocean Drive" on Xanax, a chilled out rendition that just soars. Plug in and you'll hear what I mean.

8. Diplo - Express Yourself (feat. Nicky Da B)

Putting "Express Yourself" here because I firmly believe it's not a good weekend until you've twerked on at least three walls to this track.

That's all from me. Thanks for reading along and make sure to check in next week for another edition of Beats & Pieces!
