Artists to Watch: SLUMBERJACK

Recently I was given the opportunity to sit down with the very talented Australian live electronic duo Slumberjack.  These artists have a very unique sound design and listening to the dynamic of music they play in there live/DJ sets I was quite excited to explore their musical minds.  The duo is on tour  currently with that boy from london "Troyboi'.  The tour stopped by NYC for a huge night with an even bigger bill that included - Yehme2, Louis Futon, Slumberjack, and of course Troyboi.  During the night we sat down and I was able to ask them the following:

DB: Fresh off your 2017 ep "Fracture" (which I thought was wonderful by the way).  Although every track has a special place in a Producer/Musicians heart, which track "hits home" for you guys?

SLUMBERJACK: If we had to choose a song it would have to be "Afraid, Unafraid."  Everything flowed so smoothly with the production of this track that it actually felt as if all the melodies fell right into place.  The song actually took 2 days to make.  We were at an amazingly beautiful festival in Fiji called "Your Paradise Festival" and we were working on the track on the flight and by the end of the trip the song was done and finished.  You can definitely say the vibes surrounding us at that time influenced the feel of this track.

DB: That is amazing ! On to the next question, how did the SLUMBERJACK project come about?

SLUMBERJACK: Both of us won the same dj competition the year after each other and we were totally interested in meeting each other.  We met and started to jump into the studio together.  Our first release was a drum n bass track before we officially came out with a 4 track ep under the name Slumberjack and that was when the project finally blew up.

Who would you guys love to collaborate with one day? A dream collab in a sense?

If there were two artists we would love to get in a studio with it would have to be between Skrillex and Timbaland.  Both artists would be amazing to sit next to and just study their minds.

On a day off of touring and making music, what do you like to do for fun?

Well on days off we really enjoy going hiking / exploring. Whether it be to try new food or to unwind and kick back in nature with a beautiful view.

How is the energy touring from city to city? Is it easy to bring the energy from a big city like New York to somewhere smaller like a city in Illinois or Oregon?

We actually really enjoy playing smaller venues.  Huge venues are so much fun , but to get the opportunity to be intimate with a crowd is another level of energy and raw emotion.

Who or what influenced you too make music?

Our biggest TERVfluence as a singer / songwriter would have to be Justin Timberlake.

What song do you guys enjoy playing the most live right now?

As of right now one of our favorite tracks to play live would have to be Skrillex & Habstrakt - Chicken Soup (Wildlyfe Edit)

Diving into our last and final question. As a live act that alone puts you in a class of your own. The dynamic of live music/instruments is always the preferred choice. What instruments do you play ? how long have you played them?

I have played the piano since I was thirteen years old (Morgan).  As for me (Fletcher)  I have played the drums since I was a kid as well.  I was in a marching band growing up , a pipe and drum corp.

Fletcher and Morgan I want to thank you so much for your time it was great getting the opportunity to dissect your minds.

2018 I would watch out because SLUMBERJACK is coming in hot.  These artists have big h upside , they are definitely a must-see.  Get there new ep "Fracture" available everywhere and check this talent out for yourself.
